DropShare.net
Reviews | DropShare.net Let's face it, there are occasionally times when we need to send somebody a fairly large file, but our email client chokes on it because it's bigger than a certain size. Or, maybe our email program can handle it, but it's too big for the intended recipient's mailbox. Or, maybe there's no problem with email limits, but the file is so incredibly large that the upload takes forever.

Not to worry. DropShare is here.

Hey, why didn't somebody think of this earlier?

Let's suppose that you have a fairly large file; say it's a data base with all the phone numbers of everyone in Western Civilization and half of Texas too and you want to send it to your brother Mohammet in Bummphug, Egypt. DropShare.app doesn't even have to be launched and running when you begin.

Drag the icon of your big file across your desktop and drop it onto the icon of DropShare.app. DropShare will lauch and run. Am I going too fast for anybody?

TWO: This is the hard part.
DropShare will store your big file in a faraway corner of Cyberspace and automatically generate a random URL (http://...) for it on your screen. At this point, no one but you knows what the URL is, so your precious data file is perfectly safe.

Select the new URL and hit Command-C to copy it to your clipboard.

This is really hard.

THREE...: It's done!
Paste the link that you've copied into an email (or instant message) and send it to Mohammet (or whomever, there's no limit on how many people you can allow to download your data). All Mohammet has to do on his end is double-click on it, and DropShare will download it to his hard disk, completely bypassing his size-restricted email client.

Pretty slick, huh?

Pros
Computer Buzz often deals with some massive data files, and the size limitations that most email providers slap us with are a real pain. DropShare is one of our favorite web sites, and the pro factors far outweight the cons. For example:

-The software generates random links that are impossible to guess, so your files are safe until you give the URL to your buddy(s).

-Anyone you want to send big files to only needs a web browser to download your data; they don't even have to have their own copy of DropShare.

-You can even share complete directories on your hard disk; just drop them onto DropShare like you would an individual file.

-No configuration required; it just simply works. We can't say that about many software apps anymore.

-DropShare automatically configures most home class routers as long as they support universal plug and play (UPnP), and most do.

-You can check with DropShare's web site and see when (and if) your files have been downloaded and by whom.

-Your files don't have to hang out there in Cyberspace forever. You can delete them from the DropShare server any time you like. If you forget and leave them there, DropShare will automatically delete them for you.

-You can't argue with the price--it's free!
Cons
-At the moment, the biggest drawback to DropShare is the fact that it only runs on Macs. And at that, nothing but the most recent version (10.4) of Mac OS X will do. The good news is that a Windows version is expected out before the end of this year.

-Even though email size limitations are not a consideration, your computer still has to upload that sucker to DropShare's web site, and that can take a mind-numbingly long time if you have a very large file and/or a very slow Internet connection. The good news is that you only have to upload the file once; after that, one or a thousand of your friends can go get it from DropShare.

-Because of the random, impossible-to-guess-or-hack URL that is generated for each file that you upload to DropShare, your data are pretty darn secure. That is, until you send that URL to your buddy. There's always the possibility that he will pass it on to other folks that you never intended to have access to your sensitive data. The moral of that story is, "Choose your friends (and business associates) wisely."
