Linux isn't just an alternative operating system for web servers and propeller-heads anymore. The secret is out: it's quickly getting to be a mainstream OS that rivals Windows in power, ease, and features, and it's far ahead of Windows in terms of security. To be more accurate, Linux is not really an operating system; it is a low level software kernel upon which an operating system can be based.
At last count there were more than 600 differently named operating systems based upon this kernel, all of which fall under the broad, nominal umbrella of "Linux."
Without a doubt, the big number one Linux web site on planet Earth is DistroWatch.com, a one-man show published by Ladislav Bodnar. Whether you're a Linux newbie or an old pro, DistroWatch is where you'll want to check out and download (mostly for free) the newest Linux OS versions first thing every morning.
We've been watching this site for you for some time now, and it only seems to get better and better. This is one of our all-time favorite examples of how a major league web site should be run. Google gives it a PageRank rating of 9 (out of 10).

List of Most Active Distros
Over on the far right side of its home page, DistroWatch.com keeps a running count and average of which distros get the most hits per day (HPD) by visitors on its website. This doesn't tell us exactly how many people are using which distros, but it does give us a qualitative idea of which distros are most popular (i.e., generating the most interest) and which ones aren't.
You can choose the time span for which you want to see the data: 12 months, 6 months, 3 months, 30 days, or 7 days. Or you can even go back and search for the rankings in several prior calendar years.

Individual Distro Info
DistroWatch.com can display a page with just about all the info you could ever want on every single Linux distribution in its data base (such as Ubuntu, pictured here). This includes a description blurb, the distro's home page, mailing lists, published reviews, documentation, screenshots, download sites, links to recent news items, and a detailed list of the versions of the multiple software packages that have been bundled with the distro from its first release to its latest.
Wow! The sheer volume of the info on this site boggles the mind. No wonder DistroWatch is the primo Linux web site in the world.

More OS alternatives
DistroWatch doesn't track just Linux distros; it also keeps up with other alternative OSs such as BSD (about a dozen distros) and UNIX (maybe half a dozen) and occasionally a few others that pop up on the radar screen. They're mostly free for the downloading, and you don't have to be a propeller-head to use most of them. One of our favorites is FreeBSD (see adjacent screenshot).

DistroWatch Weekly newsletter
Once a week, the publisher of this site posts a newsletter (it's more like a rambling editorial) concerning the latest happenings in the Linux subculture. He reviews the past week's major distro releases and gets his readers caught up on all the Linux-related gossip, much of which comes from behind the scenes. It's interesting and informative and, best of all, refreshingly brief and to the point.
